Why Does Hyaluronic Acid Make My Skin Feel Dry? (And Why It Can Feel Tight Too)
Share
Hyaluronic acid has become one of the biggest skincare ingredients of the last decade. It's in everything from serums to moisturisers, and it's often described as the ultimate hydration ingredient. Its great for hydrating and plumping the skin.
So it can be really confusing when you apply it. in a serum form.. and your skin feels tighter than before.
If that's happened to you, don't worry. It doesn't mean hyaluronic acid isn't right for your skin. More often than not, it simply means it isn't being used in the way it was designed to be used.
Hyaluronic acid isn't actually a moisturiser
This is probably the biggest misconception about hyaluronic acid.
Hyaluronic acid doesn't moisturise your skin on its own.
Instead, it's what's called a humectant. That means its job is to attract water.
Think of it like a sponge. It grabs hold of water wherever it can find it.
The important question is...
Where is it getting that water from?
Why your skin can end up feeling tight
If you apply hyaluronic acid to completely dry skin and don't follow it with a moisturiser, there isn't much water available on the surface of your skin.
Your skin can end up feeling tight because the hydration hasn't been locked in properly. In drier environments, this effect can be even more noticeable, especially if your skin barrier is already compromised.
The good news is that this is usually easy to fix.
How to use hyaluronic acid properly
This is how I recommend using it.
Step 1: Start with damp skin
After cleansing, don't dry your face completely.
Leave it slightly damp, or lightly mist your face with a rose water spray.
That gives the hyaluronic acid plenty of water to bind to.
Step 2: Apply your hyaluronic acid
Massage a small amount over your damp skin.
Step 3: Lock everything in
Finish with a moisturiser, facial oil or balm.
The moisturiser helps reduce water loss and keeps all that lovely hydration where you actually want it, inside your skin rather than evaporating away.
My favourite routine
Personally, I like to keep it simple.
- Cleanse
- Lightly mist with rose water
- Apply hyaluronic acid while my skin is still damp
- Finish with a moisturiser or a nourishing balm
It only takes a minute or two, but it makes a huge difference to how hydrated my skin feels.
If your skin still feels dry...
If you've tried applying hyaluronic acid correctly and your skin still feels tight, the problem may not actually be the hyaluronic acid.
Your skin barrier could simply need more support.
Look for products containing nourishing oils, butters and barrier-supporting ingredients alongside your hyaluronic acid. Sometimes your skin isn't asking for more water, it needs help holding onto the water it already has.
The bottom line
Hyaluronic acid is a fantastic ingredient, but it isn't a complete skincare routine on its own.
Think of it as the ingredient that attracts hydration, while your moisturiser or balm is the ingredient that keeps it there. Giving you plump, hydrated, happy skin.
Used together, they make a great team.
