Sagging Neck Skin? Here’s Why It Happens and 5 Ways to Improve It Naturally
Share
Why the Neck Ages Faster (and What You Can Do About It)
Let’s be honest—when we think about ageing skin, we often focus on our face. But then one day, we catch a glimpse in the mirror and there it is. Our neck, quietly telling the whole story. Crepey skin, vertical lines, sagginess under the jaw...
The truth is, the neck often ages faster than the face
Why is that?
Well, unlike our face, the skin on our neck is thinner and has fewer oil glands, meaning it's more susceptible to dryness and less equipped to recover from damage. Then there’s gravity, always heading south, add to that Sun exposure (the neck and decolletage can get a lot of sun exposure whilst the face is protected with a hat) tech-neck, poor posture, and the natural slowing of collagen production and you end up with a neck that shows your age.
What to do about it?
One of the most overlooked things you can do for your neck is improve your posture. The way we hold ourselves, especially with our constant phone use can either support the neck or contribute to that downward pull we all dread. Exercises that correct posture and strengthen the core and upper body can help with neck posture and improve the look of the neck.
Another gentle but surprisingly effective tool is Face yoga
These are targeted movements that help to awaken and tone the underlying muscles of the face and neck, muscles that often go underused and sag with age. When practiced consistently, face yoga can help improve circulation, support lymphatic drainage, and create a lifted, more toned appearance in the neck and jawline.
Aesthetic Options
For those wanting to fast-track results, aesthetic treatments can absolutely help. Options like radiofrequency skin tightening, collagen-stimulating injectables, cryotherapy or ultrasound therapies can support firmer, smoother skin on the neck and décolletage. These treatments work best in tandem with great skincare and facial exercises too. These procedures are done in clinic.
Red light Therapy
Red light therapy is getting a lot of attention lately, for its rejuvenating and healing abilities for many applications, and there's a good reason for this. It’s a non-invasive treatment that uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to help boost collagen, improve skin texture, and reduce fine lines. Most of the research has been done on the face, but the skin on our neck is very similar, just a bit thinner and often more neglected.
In clinical trials using LED light masks, people saw firmer, plumper skin and fewer wrinkles after regular use, so what we know so far suggests red light therapy can be a great support in tackling sagging and crepey skin in the neck area. It’s not a quick fix, but with consistency, it can be a lovely addition to your routine. LED masks can be bought for the face area and they can be bought specifically to fit the neck area too.
Topical Creams
Moisturising, nourishing and hydrating the neck area with great skincare helps the neck area to look and feel softer, less wrinkled and crepey. Over time, topical application of specific ingredients can help the neck area to look and feel better, although there is a limit to what a topical cream can achieve for sagginess, a nourishing cream plus a twice daily neck massage when applied can help to move stagnant lymph in this area and can help to improve the look of this area.
