Do I Need a Face Oil and a Moisturiser?
If you already use a moisturiser, you might wonder why you would need a face oil as well.
Do you really need both?
The short answer is no.
If your moisturiser leaves your skin feeling soft, comfortable and hydrated, you may not need a face oil at all.
But if your skin is dry, or seems to be getting drier as you get older, using both can be lovely.
What's the Difference Between a Face Oil and a Moisturiser?
A moisturiser usually contains both water and oils, along with other ingredients that help hydrate and soften your skin.
A face oil is different. It doesn't add water to your skin. Instead, it adds oils that can help your skin feel softer, smoother and more nourished.
Think of a face oil as an extra layer of richness rather than a replacement for everything else.
When Might I Add a Face Oil?
You might enjoy adding a face oil if:
-
Your skin feels dry again a few hours after moisturising.
-
Your skin has become drier as you've got older.
-
Your skin feels particularly dry in winter.
-
You simply love the soft, nourished feeling of an oil.
If your skin already feels great with moisturiser alone, though, there's no rule saying you need to add another product.
Which Goes First: Face Oil or Moisturiser?
If you're using both, I generally suggest:
Moisturiser first, then face oil.
Apply your moisturiser as usual. Then gently press or massage a few drops of face oil over the top.
You can also mix a drop or two of oil into your moisturiser if you prefer to keep things really simple.
Can I Use Face Oil Instead of Moisturiser?
You can.
Some people love using a face oil on its own, especially if their skin feels comfortable that way.
But if your skin feels tight or dehydrated, an oil alone may not be enough because oil doesn't add water to your skin. Try using a moisturiser first and adding your oil afterwards.
Keep Your Skincare Simple
You don't need a ten-step skincare routine.
If you've spent most of your life using one moisturiser, you don't suddenly need a bathroom full of bottles just because your skin is changing.
Start with what your skin needs.
If moisturiser is enough, wonderful.
If your skin is asking for something a little richer, adding a face oil can be a simple extra step.
Good skincare doesn't have to be complicated.
