Australian Dry Winter Skin Care: Bee Balm Edition
Winter in Australia does something sneaky to our skin. The days feel mild compared to what our friends in colder climates deal with, but between heaters, cold dry air outside, houses that are not optimised for warmth (so we feel the cold even at home) and hot baths and showers we can't resist......
Our skin barrier takes a real hit this time of year. If your skin is feeling tight, flaky, or just not as comfortable as usual, you are not alone, and there is a simple reason for it.
Why Australian winters are so drying on skin
It is not just the cold. Heating systems pull moisture out of the air inside our homes, and that dry indoor air draws water straight out of our skin. Add in wind, lower humidity, and long hot showers and baths (we love them but they can dry our skin out) you have got a recipe dry skin.
The good news is you do not need a complicated routine to fix this. You need the right kind of ingredients doing the right kind of work, and that is exactly where beeswax comes in.
Why beeswax is such a powerhouse for dry skin
We are a little biased, our business being founded with beeswax, but the research backs us up here. Beeswax is one of the few natural ingredients that does three jobs at once for your skin.
It is an occlusive. This means it forms a light, breathable barrier over the skin that helps stop water evaporating out. Dermatology researchers describe beeswax as semi occlusive, which is the sweet spot. It seals moisture in without suffocating the skin the way a heavier synthetic barrier ingredient can.
It is a humectant. Beeswax actually helps draw moisture towards the skin as well as holding it there, which is a big part of why it feels so nourishing rather than just sitting on top like a plain oil.
It is an emollient. This is the part that makes your skin feel soft and smooth almost immediately. Emollients fill in the tiny gaps between skin cells, which is exactly what dry, flaky winter skin needs.
On top of all that, raw beeswax and honey (especially when it comes straight from the hive, like ours does) carry natural antibacterial and anti inflammatory properties thanks to propolis, the resin bees use to protect their hive. That is a big reason why beeswax based balms have long been used to calm redness, soothe irritation, and support healing in compromised skin.
Meet our Bee Balm
This is exactly why we created our Bee Balm. It is made using beeswax and raw honey straight from our own on farm beehives here in Country Victoria, blended with sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, avocado oil, and a touch of Australian lavender essential oil.
Each of those oils earns its place in the formula:
- Sweet almond oil is rich in vitamin E and fatty acids that help skin hold onto moisture and stay soft
- Jojoba oil closely mimics the skin's own natural oils, so it absorbs beautifully without feeling greasy
- Avocado oil is one of the richest natural oils around, packed with vitamins A, D and E for skin that needs extra nourishment
- Lavender essential oil adds a calming, relaxing quality that makes applying your balm feel like a little ritual rather than a chore
Together with the beeswax and honey, this blend gives you deep hydration, softer texture, and a protective layer against the elements, all from 100 percent natural, locally sourced ingredients.
How to use it this winter
The beauty of Bee Balm is how flexible it is.
As a stand alone moisturiser: Warm a small amount between your fingers and press it into clean skin, morning or night. A little goes a long way. This is genuinely enough for a lot of people, especially through the driest part of winter.
Layered with hyaluronic acid: If your skin needs extra help, apply your hyaluronic acid serum first to slightly damp skin. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, meaning it pulls water into the skin, but it needs something. That is where Bee Balm comes in. Applying it over your serum locks that hydration in and gives you the best of both, the plumping pull of hyaluronic acid and the sealing, protective power of beeswax. Moisturiser can be used in between as well.
Layered with a moisturiser: If you already love your moisturiser but need something extra for particularly dry patches (think elbows, hands, or those flaky bits around the nose), Bee Balm works beautifully as an added layer or a targeted spot treatment. And its great as a night cream, all over face and neck.
It is also lovely on hands, feet, elbows, and anywhere else winter tends to leave rough or cracked. Because it is so richly nourishing, many of our customers keep a jar by the bed for a slow, relaxing application before sleep. and don't forget your neck area!
A quick tip for best results
Skin absorbs product best when it is slightly damp rather than bone dry, so apply your Bee Balm (and any serums) right after cleansing or showering, while your skin still has a little moisture on it.
The takeaway
Winter skin does not need ten steps and a cabinet full of products. It needs ingredients that actually work with your skin's own barrier, and beeswax is one of nature's best at that job. Our Bee Balm brings together beeswax, raw honey, and nourishing natural oils in one simple jar, made right here on our farm in Country Victoria.
Whether you use it on its own or layer it with your favourite hyaluronic acid or moisturiser, it is a beautiful, honest way to look after your skin through the colder months.
